Visiting Komodo Island one of the best experiences you will ever have. The island is one of the most beautiful places. It also has amazing beaches, a wide variety of animals, a rich marine life, and if you are travelling with friends and family, they will never get bored because of the endless number of activities that they can do around the area.
One of the most interesting things that you can do on Komodo island is diving. This is because other than the experience of being underwater and trying out something new, it is the best way to get a closer view and feel of what nature has to offer.
If this is something that you are interested in, it is always good to know a few tricks that can make your experience smoother and stress-free. One of the most important things that you will have to learn is how well to use your air when underwater. The following are tips that will come in handy in helping you to be more economical when it comes to your air consumption.
Take slow and deep breaths
It is amazing how simple breathing techniques can help in terms of prolonging how long your air lasts. Generally, taking a deep and full breath will reduce the number of times that you will have to breathe. This will, in turn, reduce your overall air consumption since you will be consuming less energy. Breathing slowly also helps to reduce air consumption. This is because, at slow speeds, the air encounters less friction. This, in turn, means that your body will work less in order to get air into your lungs.
To make sure that your body makes the most of the little air that you have, it is always advisable that you take pauses after inhaling. Doing so will allow your lungs to work more efficiently and effectively, something that will go a long way in ensuring that you waste less oxygen.
Move slowly
When you are underwater, moving faster only increases the resistance that you face. This increased resistance will cause you to work harder than you have to just to get where you want to go. As a result, your body will use more oxygen. You will, in turn, consume your oxygen inefficiently.
Slow movements are always more efficient. Furthermore, moving slowly will also give you the opportunity to fully appreciate the beautiful underwater scenery that Komodo provides. Therefore, it is beneficial both to your experience and your oxygen consumption.
Use narrower kicks
In addition to moving slowly, you should minimize the width of your kicks. This is because adopting a wider kicking technique will only increase the drag on your body. It will cause you to have to fight harder to move in the direction that you want. This will increase your overall oxygen consumption.
As a general rule, you should always limit your kicks within the width of the “hole” that your body makes underwater. Doing this will ensure that the drag on your body is at a minimum. As a result, your movement through water will be more efficient, something that will definitely cause you to consume less oxygen.
Optimize your weight for motion
An easy way of ensuring that you use less energy, and hence less air, is to keep everything close to your body. Instead of attaching any accessories that you have separately to your gear, try stashing then in your pockets. Since longer hoses contribute to an increase in drag, you should definitely shorten them whenever you can. This, in addition to getting rid of any accessories or equipment that you don’t need, will go a long way towards making your movements much more efficient. It will reduce the rate at which you consume air and increase the amount of time that you will have to explore the breathtaking marine life that exists around Komodo Island.
